Constraints - Units/Credits
Updated over 6 months ago

For definitions on some of the terms below or refreshers on constraint basics, please visit our Constraints article!

This article contains constraints that deal with units/credits (these terms can be used interchangeably in Stellic, although we customize the platform to use the language at your institution). The constraints are listed at the top and bottom of the article, with the bottom of the article containing more details about each constraint.

Constraints at a Glance:

Constraint Details

Constraints for total units

At least [x] units in total [Secondary Constraint]

  • Requires x number of units for the requirement to be fulfilled.

  • This constraint can be used when the units or credit hours are required, rather than the number of classes.

  • This can also be handy for top-level program constraints, such as a program that needs a total number of units overall.

Only courses from the following sub-requirements can count toward the units total [Program Level Constraint] [Secondary Constraint]

  • Can only be used once the "at least [x] units in total" constraint has been added

  • Note: This requirement can only be applied after an 'at least x units in total' constraint, and is only allowed on Major requirements.

Constraints for course related units

At least [x] courses/units from a given course set [Primary or Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint should be used when you have multiple buckets in which a student can choose a course from. This could be specific departments, a range of courses, or a specific list of courses.

  • This course set constraint has become one of the most versatile building blocks of the Stellic requirement editor - we recommend that you use this as a default option when a fulfill any/fulfill all isn't appropriate.

  • When using the "at least [x] courseset" constraint as a secondary constraint, you can also specify "0" in the limit. This will restrict any courses from counting toward the primary constraint unless they match the criteria entered here.

  • The copy changes once the constraint is done being edited to indicate that only courses that match the listed criteria are able to count toward the requirement.

At least [x] courses/units excluding the given course set [Primary or Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint allows any course to count except for the courses listed.

At most [x] courses/units from a given course set [Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint limits the highest number of units that can be taken from a course set.

At most [x] courses/units excluding the given course set [Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint limits the highest number of units that can be taken from courses that do not include the courses specified

  • Specifying "0" causes the constraint to not allow any units for that requirement.

Minimum of [x] units for each course counted [Secondary Constraint]

  • Courses that are not at least [x] units won't be permitted to count for the requirement.

  • This constraint should be used when it is required to take at least a certain number of credits for each course that counts for the requirement.

  • In this example, 0,1, or 2 unit courses wouldn’t count to fulfill the requirement.

At least [x] courses/units with defined grades [Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint allows you to specify that a minimum number of courses/units need to meet a specific grade threshold. You can specify a specific grade, grade or higher, grade or lower, or grading options.

Take [x] courses/units from the following departments: [departments] [Primary Constraint]

  • This constraint should be used when it is required to take at least a certain number of courses from a list of specific departments or department codes. You can also define additional courses that should be counted to handle the case when a course isn’t really offered under the listed departments but covers the same area of study. This is a great option if you could take any elective class under a certain department.

  • Additionally, you can specify if all courses chosen through this constraint should be from the same department.

Constraints for grade/course type related units

At most [x] courses/units with defined grades [Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint allows you to dictate how many courses above or below a certain grade, or how many transfer courses, can be allowed to count for the requirement. To make sure that no courses of a certain grade or no transfer courses would fill the requirement, set the count to ‘0’.

or

At most [x] courses/units with transfer grades [Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint checks for if the grade of a course is marked as a transfer grade within the backend of the system (this would have been established during initial Stellic set up - contact your campus Stellic admin for more information), and then limits the number of units of courses with transfer grades. There can be multiple grades that fall within this constraint (for example, if your institution used all of these for various types of transfer credit, they would all fall under this constraint: T, TA, TR, etc.)

At most [x]courses/units with transfer status [Secondary Constraint]

  • This constraint checks for type of the course is marked as a transfer status (this would have been established during initial Stellic set up - contact your campus Stellic admin for more information), and then limits the number of units or courses with transfer status.
